From the Founder Donnette Heath…
I survived a hemorrhagic stroke in January 2013. Unfortunately, I was unable to fully recover from a physical perspective and I am now disabled with extremely limited strength and mobility of my left side, especially the arm and hand. I am grateful for my progress, each day is a blessing to just be alive!
However, the true test of my spirit is now at the forefront. The vision and mission of Dance Repertory when I founded it in 1997 has come full circle, forcing me to look in the mirror with a renewed love, understanding and respect for myself. I must truly live by my own words and test my ability to accept myself unconditionally, despite how my body and abilities have drastically changed.
Oddly, I have never been more confident in myself and who I am than right now. Why? Because I am who I am, exactly as you see me, not trying to be something I’m not. I can’t! I now "dance backstage" as the dancers’ shine in the spotlight! I am proud and honored. This is a blessing, I am alive and thriving! I will never give up. Why should I?
Vision Series Mission…
Dance Repertory's Vision Series Dance Festival is our signature annual event. The primary mission has always been to allow all participants and their audiences to accept and embrace each other without criticism or judgement. Love and appreciate each other "where we are now, rather than where we think we should be." The Vision Series provides educational and professional performance opportunities to an innovative cross-section of dance artists from the Greater Bay Area. It develops and presents the diverse visions of high school dancers, professionals, emerging choreographers, and academic instructors, regardless of individual experience or expertise.
1. This education project expands knowledge, provides mentorship, offers support, cultivates artistic exchange.
2. increases the exposure of a variety of dance styles as an art form to the general public.
3. Here, artists are supported and given the framework in which to grow and flourish.
At dRep, we have a new goal to raise awareness and financial support to many other non-profit organizations that drastically change lives and save souls. This new feature of the annual Vision Series presents all participants in a CharityChanceDance. Each group has a section of a dance that is put together the day of the show, then performed for the first time to their audience that night. Audience members give donations as a celebration of all performers sharing the stage together, dancing to change lives!
